Barry Reckord, a trailblazing, internationally lauded Jamaican playwright, producer, actor and author, died on Tuesday, at 85. He spent most of his life in England, but, in ill health, returned to Jamaica about five years ago.
State of the Arts: Artists shaping the world

State of the Arts, the national conference for the arts and culture sector, is returning for its third year with a focus on the artist's role in contributing to a changing society.
In order to ensure that artists' voices are fully represented, the Arts Council is pleased to announce that it will offer 50 bursaries for artists to attend State of the Arts 2012. Each bursary will cover the cost of UK travel, one night's accommodation and free attendance at all conference events.
Who can apply
· you must be an artist working professionally from a base in England
· you should not be a student currently in full or part-time education
· artists from all disciplines can apply. We plan to select a broad mix of artists in relation to geography, artform, gender, age, cultural background and career stage
Artistic directors and other full-time employees of Arts Council regularly funded organisations or future National portfolio organisations are not eligible to apply.

Please submit a proposal to Lorna Hale at sota12bursaries@artscouncil.org.uk by 12 noon on 22 December 2011.
Your proposal must answer both of the following questions:
· Who are you and what do you do? You may include a web link to your work.
· Why do you think you should receive an artist bursary for State of the Arts 2012?
