Kazuko Hohki

Artist

Kazuko Hohki is an artist, singer, musician, animator, director, performer and storyteller. She has made a trilogy of solo performances based on her experience as a Japanese woman in the UK: 'Toothless', 'The Shining Princess' and 'My Husband Is A Spaceman' with which she has toured worldwide. She has won a number of awards and places on high-profile writing, directing and performance projects. She is Associate Artist with Duckie.

When my son laughs at my jokes

What is your greatest ambition?
Dying happy

What is your greatest fear?
Dying unhappily

What piece of theatre, art or music inspires you?
1927's Between The Devil and Deep Blue Sea

What has been or is the biggest challenge you’ve faced, pursuing a career in the Arts?
That there's only 24 hours in a day

What do you wish you’d known when you were younger, that you know now?
Things do change

What has been your proudest moment?
I fixed an electric plug yesterday

And your most embarrassing?
Twice, I've skipped an entire scene from my solo show. The first time, I did not even notice till I'd finished the show. The musician and technician had a very hard time to adjust the show afterwards. Once was bad enough but twice on two different shows was terrible!

Do you think British theatre is in a state of crisis?
It's getting harder to get funding which is sad news – I'd pick theatre over the olympics, anytime.

What do you hope for Sustained Theatre to achieve?
That it truly connects people
